As a part-time Wedding and Event Sales Associate you will be helping customers figure out what colors and themes are best for their upcoming sweet 16, wedding or corporate event.

It’s a perfect part-time job for performers who need flexibility and who feel they would be:

The starred companies are companies that friends have recommended. For Promo companies you will probably be asked to send in your headshot – smiley is best! Most of the companies have a “Talent Sign-up” on their website, if not, just give them a call to see how you can submit yourself to get on their roster. Like Temp Companies, it’s a little hard to get on their list of regulars that they send out, but do a great job every time and you’ll become one of their go- to’s in no time!

Applying at a Temp Agency – Tips

Yesterday I applied at a Temp Agency and I thought I’d share a few tips to help you put your best foot forward.

Bring 4 hard copies of your business resume – here’s a link to a blog post I did on resumes http://www.survivaljobsforactors.com/o-res-u-me/

Ideally have your resume printed out on resume paper – something like this you can get on Amazon or at any office supply store

Bring 2 forms of ID – this is usually your Social Security card and your Driver License, or your Passport.

They’ll have you fill out an I-9 and a W-4 – you’ve probably seen these dozens of times, ask the receptionist if you have any questions on how to fill out

Get your ID and resume copies together and pack them the night before, don’t scramble around the morning of to get everything together.

Make a cheat sheet for yourself for these applications – they’re basically all the same. I had to give at least 3 co-worker reference names & phone numbers, have those handy and I had to write down my last 3 employers along with their address & phone numbers.

Plan on getting to the temp office at least 15 minutes early, you’ll probably have to sign-in with the security desk in the building lobby (there’s always a line if you’re running late) and you’ll probably have to fill out a bunch of paperwork before you meet with the temp agent.

DO NOT show up late. If you’re going to show up late for the interview, why would they think you’d be on time for a temp job?

Dress professionally. If you don’t have a suit, wear a pair of black pants and a button-up shirt. Please make sure you press your clothes before you go. I always wear tennis shoes around the city, but I change into by nice dress shoes before I get off the subway and stash my tennies in my bag (but make sure to zip it up.) I use something like this – a computer bag, that looks like a nice bag, but still has room to hold my portfolio and tennis shoes.

Get yourself a nice, plain folder, or a portfolio (with a pocket) for interviews. This will keep your resume nice and clean, and give you space to write down any questions you may have. Something like this -

When you meet the temp agent, shake their hand and smile! They will probably ask you for your resume first thing, so have that ready to give to them, don’t spend a few minutes shuffling through your bags to get it.

The temp agent will usually say “Tell me a little about your experience” – have about a 2 minute overview of your office work ready – or if you haven’t done office work before, just talk about what experience you do have. It helped for me to have a copy of my resume in front of me as I was talking, so I could refer to different items on it.

While you’re in the meeting ask what is the best way to keep in contact with the temp agent / how do they want you to keep them updated with your availability? Each office is different, but usually an email once a week with your availability for the next week is useful.

After you go home shoot them a nice little email, or send a hand-written thank you. – It was a pleasure to meet with you today. Thanks for taking the time to share with me the (insert temp agency name here) process. I look forward to working together…. – you get the idea.

Let me know what other questions you may have. I would recommend working with around 5 temp agencies if you really want to work steadily. Some will like you and some will never call you in for work. It’s just a numbers game. But, with anything in this business, keep a positive attitude and you will find one that’s a great fit.
